Abstract

The following research questions are to be addressed in accordance with the goals of this review. 1) Why have previous research on WeChat mobile devices and learner autonomy produced inconsistent results? 2) How does the use of WeChat affect the autonomy of learners? The majority of students in China have smartphones and WeChat accounts because to the country's rapid technological advancement and the app's rising popularity. One of the most popular social media platforms in China is now WeChat. Reviewing earlier research to determine the viability and effects of integrating WeChat into the classroom in order to increase learner autonomy would thus be a wise starting point for future investigation. Hence, this article systematically reviewed research articles that explored the effect of WeChat implementation to enhance learner autonomy by especially focusing on the research design, findings, and the impact of using WeChat as a technology-based device in the classroom on learner autonomy. The findings from this review are divided due to the inconsistent research methods and the diversity of participants. Several implications are drawn from this review. In particular, future researchers are encouraged to carry out more rigorous studies with well-established instruments and be more specific regarding how the implementation of WeChat improves learner autonomy.
