Abstract

The use of birth control products has the potential to improve economic welfare of women. Economic and social welfare are processes that fluctuate over time as individuals pass through various life stages. Awareness of birth control methods especially contraceptives are high in Ghana. A quantitative survey-based study was carried out with 400 randomly selected women from all 39 settlements of the Amasaman Area Council in Ghana's Greater Accra Region, Ghana. The findings of the survey data analysis revealed that the likelihood of women using birth control products decreased as their income increased. Students were less likely than non-students to use birth control. However, the level of awareness of these products played a role in increasing the likelihood of use by students and higher-income women. The perceived quality of information about reproductive health and the caliber of services offered by clinic nurses and doctors were additional variables that affected the likelihood of taking birth control products. It was discovered that women who had used birth control products at some point during their reproductive lives earned significantly more income than those who had never used any of these products.
