Abstract

This chapter contribute to the sustainable growth of the paper industry in India and mitigate the challenges associated with the raw material scarcity. In paper making process blending of long fibres with short fibered pulps holds great importance. The morphological and chemical characteristics of hard wood and softwood fibers differ significantly. Softwood fibers tend to have poor drainage, lower wet strength and a tendency to stick press rolls. In order to overcome these challenges and improve the quality of paper blending plays a crucial role. Pulp can be blended in three distinct ways that is chips blending, pulp blending before beating and pulp blending after beating. Blending of pulp before beating marginally improves the physical strength, whereas blending the pulps separately and then combining them after beating yields excellent physical strength properties. This investigation focussed on the blending of Ipomoea Carnea Jacq pulp with bamboo pulps in blending. The idea was to explore the potential for enhancing the strength properties of the paper.
