Abstract

Introduction: Biological synthesis of nanoparticles in recent years gained a great popularity due to its cost-effectiveness, available sources of raw material, low toxicity, and great potential in pharmacology. The synthesis of SeNPs using bacteria and plants shows a great opportunity for application in various fields. Oriental traditional medicine has used the aerial parts (stems, leaves and flowers) of Chrysanthemum indicum to treat vertigo, hypertensive symptoms and several infectious diseases.

Materials and Methods: 1 ml of Chrysanthemum indicum extract was added to distilled water. The mixture was heated at 60 degree celsius for 15 to 20 minutes and filtered. 0.519 grams of Selenium was added to the filtered extract and was alternated between an orbital shaker and magnetic stirrer for the synthesis of nanoparticles. DPPH radical scavenging assay was performed to estimate the antioxidant activity of Chrysanthemum indicum mediated selenium nanoparticles. Inhibition of albumin denaturation assay was used to assess the anti-inflammatory activity of Chrysanthemum indicum mediated selenium nanoparticles. BSA (Bovine serum albumin) was used as a reagent for the assay.

Results: In this study the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity was assessed in five different concentrations of reaction mixture – 10 μL, 20 μL, 30 μL, 40 μL and 50 μL. Plant extract mediated by selenium nanoparticles at 50 μL of concentration exhibited the highest antioxidant activity at 87% inhibition and the highest anti-inflammatory activity at 87% inhibition.

Conclusion: Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of Chrysanthemum indicum mediated selenium nanoparticles showed a successful outcome in both the assays.
