Abstract

Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability in addition to the primary cause of death worldwide. Several research investigations have identified that the oxidative stress and cell cytotoxicity contribute towards lesion progression in stroke, which leads to long-term illness and death. The current investigation aims at the comparative evaluation of serum oxidant and antioxidant status in patients (n=15) between age group 45- 60 years with acute stroke and acute ischemic stroke. The serum samples from these patients were analysed for oxidative stress condition by evaluating Paraoxonase 1 (PON1) level via assessing aryl esterase activity, the ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP), total oxidative status (TOS) and oxidative stress index (OSI) level. The results from our current investigation indicated that in acute stroke patients the arylesterase activity (PON1) and FRAP were decreased by 21.04% and 29.26% respectively (p<0,05), compared to acute ischemic stroke. Further, the evaluation of total antioxidant state (TAS) in acute ischemic stroke revealed that there was a significant increase in total antioxidant level by 92.2% compared to acute stroke (p <0,07), whereas, the TOS was substantially increased about 186.6% in acute stroke compared to acute ischemic stroke (p <0,03). As anticipated the OSI in acute stroke was elevated by 74.46% (p <0,05). Hence, our results strongly suggest that patients with acute stroke are at higher risk of oxidative stress and oxidative damage compared to acute ischemic stroke patients.
