Abstract

Ferrites are important magnetic materials used in electronic devices. Nanocomposites of ferrites with TiO2, SiO2 and carbon quantum dots have gained recent interest due to their unique advantages, such as high chemical stability, surface-active sites, high specific surface area, non-toxicity, excellent optical properties, and tunable porosity. By using traditional solid-state synthesis, polycrystalline samples of ferrites with Mn (1% added) and Mg, Cu, and Zn have been created. Samples have been field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) characterized after being sintered at various temperatures between 975°C and 1175°C for 10 hours. All samples are single phase with spinel structure, according to the XRD data. Lattice constant increases slightly with increase in sintering temperature. Bulk density and grain size increase with increase in sintering temperature, from 4.61 g/cm3 and 2.2 µm at 975°C to 4.99 g/cm3 and 8.8 µm at 1175°C. DC electrical resistivity decreases and dielectric constant and initial permeability increase with an increase in sintering temperature. These results suggest that sintering temperature has a prominent effect on the electrical properties.
